Pre-purchase exams

Pre-purchase examinations

Camden Equine Centre can provide pre-purchase equine examinations to help you decide if a horse you are interested in buying is right for your intended use.

We provide pre-purchase examinations for all types of horses from race and sports horses, to pleasure horses and breeding mares.

We follow the Equine Veterinarians Australia (EVA) guidelines when performing pre-purchase examinations.

Our exams provide you with information on existing and potentially issues, and include a mixture of the following, depending upon the horses intended use:

  • Clinical and basic health examination
  • Gait/lameness analysis
  • Radiographs (X-rays)
  • Ultrasound
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Blood tests
  • Endoscopy of the airways
  • Reproductive examinations.

Our veterinarians will first discuss in detail your intended use for the horse and then design a pre-purchase examination that will provide the best possible information for you to make an informed purchase decision.

Our team will also require the horse’s medical records from the seller so they can be reviewed as part of the assessment.

It is important to note that a pre-purchase exam is not a guarantee of a horse’s future health or long term fit for purpose.  It is an overview of the horse’s current health at the time of examination.Although a pre-purchase examination is designed to assist you when making a purchase decision, the decision is ultimately the buyer’s responsibility.

Basic pre-purchase exams can be performed on-farm however more in-depth examinations are performed at our hospital at Brownlow Hill.
